Question 01: Are internships compulsory in the Department of Economics?

Question 02: How many internships are required in the Department of Economics?
Answer 02: Two(2) internships are required, and each must be completed at a different institution.

Question 03: How long does each internship last?
Answer 03: Each internship must be 20(twenty) working days long.

Question 04: How can I register for the Ninova internship class?
Answer 04: Students who register on the portal and send an e-mail to the Department Internship Commission for Appendix-1A approval are added to the Internship Ninova class.
If, for any reason, you are not added to Ninova, you must inform the Internship Commission at eco-intern@itu.edu.tr.
If the commission confirms that you have been added to the Ninova class but you still do not see it in your system, you must submit a support ticket to the Information Technology Department via https://yardim.itu.edu.tr.

Question 05: What do I need to do after creating an internship record on the Portal?
Answer 05:
a) Before the internship
i. Internship applications must be submitted at latest 15(fifteen) days before the internship start date.
The Student Internship Contract and Internship Application Form (Appendix-1A) which are generated during The application must be signed by all relevant parties and uploaded by the student at least 6 (six) days before the internship begins via https://portal.itu.edu.tr.
Contact eco-intern@itu.edu.tr for Appendix-1 approval. Internships without prior approval of Appendix-1 and the contract will not be accepted.
Contact demirdoken@itu.edu.tr for contract approval. Contract approval must be obtained from the Faculty of Management, not the Internship Commission.
ii. Occupational safety training must be completed online or formally from the Workplace Health and Safety Unit.
iii. Once documents are approved by the Central Internship Unit, the SGK (social security) employment notification will be sent electronically to the student and the company.
b) During the internship
i. The Internship Start Form (Appendix-2) must be filled in, signed by the company and, uploaded by the student to the Portal within the first 5(five) days of the internship.
c) After the internship
i. The Internship Completion Certificate (Appendix-3) must be signed by the company within 5(five) days after the of the internship ends.
ii. All original signed documents — the contract, Appendix-1, internship calendar, Appendix-2, and Appendix-3 — must be combined into one PDF and uploaded to the “Assignments” section of the Ninova internship class.
Even if completed on the Portal, internships will not be evaluated unless uploaded to Ninova.

Question 06: Do I need to submit a physical copy of my internship report?
Answer 06: No. Uploading a single PDF file that includes the internship report and all attachments to Ninova is sufficient.

Question 07: Can I do a remote or hybrid internship?
Answer 07: According to ITU Rectorate, after the end of the pandemic, internships must be in person as of Summer 2022. However, if the company operates remotely or hybrid and the internship tasks are suitable for remote work (excluding field or factory internships), online internships may be accepted with the Internship Commission’s approval. In such cases, a detailed explanation of the internship content must be emailed to the Internship Commission along with the Appendix-1 documents.

Question 08: Can I do a half-day internship on days when I have classes or exams?
Answer 08: No. Internships cannot be done on days with classes or exams — including online classes or online internships.

Question 09: Can I do more than one internship at the same company?
Answer 09: No. Even if in a different department, more than one internship at the same company is not allowed..

Question 10: Can I do an internship during the semester?
Answer 10: Yes. Internships can be done during the semester if there are no classes or exams on those days, and at least 3(three) days a week per week are allocated.
Students must email their internship calendar (from the Portal) and class schedule screenshot along with Appendix-1 documents to the Internship Commission.
Internships can be done on Saturdays.

Question 11: I can no longer continue my internship. What should I do?
Answer 11: According to ITU Internship Guidelines, students may take up to 10% of the internship duration as excused absence.
For date changes or cancellations, valid reasons stated in the ITU Regulations on Excuses and Make-up Exams must apply. The student must apply to the Faculty of Management with the excuse.

Question 12: I want to change my internship dates. What should I do?
Answer 12:
If the internship has not yet started, submit a help ticket to the Central Internship Unit via https://yardim.itu.edu.tr and get approval for new dates.
If the internship has already started, you must apply to the Faculty of Management.

Question 13: What should I pay attention to when writing my internship report?
Answer 13:
i. The internship report must include separate entries for each day of the internship, and it should be at least 20 pages long.
ii. The report must be written in English. Reports in Turkish will be rejected .
iii. Each day must be described in at least 3-4 sentences .
iv. The official internship report template must be used, available under “Class Files” in the Ninova internship class.

Question 14: What is the latest I can submit my internship report?
Answer 14:
i. For summer internships: Within 1 (one) month after the start of the academic year.
ii. For semester internships: Within 15 (fifteen) days after the internship ends.
iii. For graduating students: At least 15 (fifteen) days before the final internship deadline specified in the academic calendar.

Question 15: I included public holidays in my internship calendar, but the company is closed on those days. What should I do?
Answer 15: It is the student’s responsibility to plan the internship excluding public holidays. Internships shorter than 20 working days will be rejected .

Question 16: Can I do more than one internship in the same semester?
Answer 16: Yes, only after your 1st internship is approved and all documents are uploaded. You must inform the Internship Commission in time.
You cannot start the 2nd internship before the 1st one is approved.

Question 17: Are there restrictions on the firm/department where I can intern?
Answer 17: Internships can be done in public or private sector institutions, domestic or abroad. Before starting, students must inform the Internship Commission about the firm and department via Appendix-1.
Only corporate companies are accepted for private sector internships.

Question 18: Are internships done in a second major (Double Major Program) accepted by the Economics Department?
Answer 18: If Economics is your second major, and one internship is accepted in the other department, it may also be accepted by the Economics Department if the appropriate template is used for the report and relevant documents are submitted.
The report must be in English and formatted correctly. You must also include proof of approval from the primary department’s internship coordinator.

Question 19: How do I know if my internship has been approved?
Answer 19:
Approved internships are recorded in the Old Student Information System (Banner): https://www.sis.itu.edu.tr/TR/obs-giris/obs-giris.php.
Only students who need to revise their reports are contacted.
If your report is accepted, you will not receive an email.
When your internship is approved, it will appear on your transcript in the Old Student Information System (Banner): https://www.sis.itu.edu.tr/TR/obs-giris/obs-giris.php.

Question 20: I uploaded all documents to the Portal, but my internship is not approved. Why?
Answer 20:
Uploading documents only to the Portal is not sufficient.
All documents (including the report and approved forms) must be uploaded as one combined PDF to the "Homeworks" section in Ninova ITU 401/Eco-Intern class.
Since the Internship Commission does not have access to the Portal, they cannot review or approve anything unless uploaded to Ninova.

Question 21: What are the conditions for internship exemption, and what documents are needed
Answer 21:
Students working as SGK-registered employees in a field related to their program may apply for exemption if they have worked at least as long as the required internship duration.
Students must get departmental approval from the Internship Commission before applying.
For part-time jobs, reports must meet full-time day equivalents.
Retrospective exemptions are not allowed. You must be employed on the date of application.
Applications must include:
1. Internship report.
2. SGK Service Statement.
3. Employment Notification.
4. SGK Registration Certificate (prooves whether you are still employed). Alternatively, a work certificate dated the day of application can be used.
