It is a pleasure to have Sibel Kulaksız as guest speaker for our Project Appraisal course which is coordinated by Asst. Prof. Aysun Hızıroğlu Aygün.

All students are welcomed.

Sibel Kulaksiz is a Senior Economist with the World Bank Group South Asia Region, based in Washington, D.C. She also served as Country Economist for Middle East and Africa regions task-managing macroeconomic policy work with a focus on economic growth, financial sector, fiscal policy and management, and regional economic integration issues. Ms. Kulaksiz is the lead author of numerous World Bank publications including the “Over the Horizon: A New Levant,” a sub-regional economic integration vision which proposes comprehensive economic and social development reforms and multi-country investment projects. She has in-depth experience in leading analytical and operational work, including large budget support operations, while providing policy advice to governments in the areas of economic policy, banking, trade competitiveness, and public spending efficiency. Ms. Kulaksiz is experienced in crisis recovery and conflict stabilization operations with a focus on addressing economic impacts of shocks. She is currently the focal point for corporate priorities such as women’s empowerment and climate change. Ms. Kulaksiz holds a masters degree in Economics from Hacettepe University as well as a masters degree in International Development from the Johns Hopkins University. She completed the executive education program in Economic Growth at Harvard University Kennedy School Government.

The Department of Economics, located at Maçka, a vibrant and central location of Istanbul, offers unique programs in economics that excel both in the theory and the practice of economics with the goal of producing world class and globally competitive economics majors at the undergraduate, master’s, or Ph.D. levels.

The Department of Economics at İTÜ plays a central role in channeling İTÜ's vast technical expertise of 240 years to micro- and macroeconomic policy-making. To achieve this goal, the Department employs in its teaching and research activities a multidisciplinary approach including joint workshops, seminars, guest lecturers and projects with İTÜ’s basic science and engineering departments. Field expertise of departmental faculty parallels this mission and includes Development Economics, Education Economics, Energy Economics, Health Economics, Industrial Organization, and International Trade.
